IT Capability Maturity Framework (IT-CMF)

The Innovation Value Institute (IVI) is a dedicated, not-for-profit research organization representing a collaboration between business and academia. It is funded by the National University of Ireland in Maynooth and by its patron founders and members, most of which are multi-national businesses. Examples include Intel, Boston Consulting Group, and BNY Mellon. Users of IT-CMF span the globe.

The IVI was established in 2006, and its primary offerings are:

  • The IT Capability Maturity Framework (IT-CMF), a broad but detailed framework to help grow an IT organization’s capacity to deliver business value.
  • The Capability Improvement Program (CIP) is a methodology for adoption and implementation of IT-CMF.

IT-CMF is an integrated management toolkit covering over 36 management disciplines or Critical Capabilities (CCs). For each capability, IT-CMF reflects a comprehensive suite of maturity profiles, assessment methods, and improvement roadmaps – these are expressed in business language that can be used to guide discussions on setting goals and evaluating performance.

IT-CMF acts as an unifying (or umbrella) framework that complements other domain-specific frameworks already in use in the organization, helping to resolve conflicts between them, and filling gaps in their coverage.

Furthermore, IT-CMF is industry/sector and vendor independent so that it can be used in any organizational context to guide performance improvement.
